Interested In Being a Part of a Community Garden?

Several families are starting a community garden here in Pleasant Hill and are looking for others that may want to be a part of this project. If you would like to have a plot of land, share a plot, plant a row or just help out with another area of giftedness you can offer; please let us know. The vision is for the garden to be an intergenerational project with all levels of gardening ability. In fact, we are first time gardeners ourselves. We also hope to share the vegetables with those that may need some extra food with tough economic times so, please let us know if your family has a need. Several people have been kind enough to offer some teaching opportunities.

For this trial year, there are no fees for participation. We have many seeds to share if you choose or you can feel free to purchase your own seeds or plants.

THURSDAY MAY 28th FROM 6:30 TO 8:00 WE WILL BE OUT AT THE GARDEN IF ANYONE IS INTERESTED IN COMING OUT. THERE WILL BE SOME EXPERIENCED GARDENERS AVAILABLE AT THAT TIME IF YOU WANT TO PLANT OR ASSIST OTHERS.

The garden is located in the field at the edge of Piper’s Pine {behind the rock pile|.

If you are interested in being a part of the garden in any way please feel free to contact Todd or Christin Woods at (937)676-2743 or,toddandchristin[at]woh[dot]rr[dot]com. If it goes well, we hope to continue this effort next year.

Stay Safe During Tornado Season

We may see early tornado season this year

Monday, February 09, 2009 — This week, portions of the southern United States are on watch for significant severe weather, including the possibility of tornadoes.  Tornadoes, nature’s most violent storms, are typically found east of the Rocky Mountains in the spring and summer. Peak tornado season in the southern states is March through May; in the northern states it is late spring through early summer.Twister
The American Red Cross urges residents, in potentially affected areas, to protect themselves and their families with the following helpful tips:

  • Select a place where family members should gather – your basement, or if there is no basement, a center hallway, bathroom, or closet on the lowest floor.  Keep this area free of clutter.
  • If you are in a high-rise building, pick a place in the hallway in the center of the building.  You may not have time to get to the lowest floor.
  • Know that a tornado watch means a tornado is possible in your area, and a tornado warning means a tornado has been sighted and may be headed for your area.  Go to safety immediately.
  • If a tornado watch is issued, listen to local radio and television for updates and be alert to changing weather conditions.  Blowing debris or the sound of the approaching tornado may alert you.  Many say it sounds like a freight train.
  • If a tornado warning is issued and you are inside, go to the safe place you picked to protect yourself from glass and other flying objects.  If you are outside, hurry to the basement of a nearby sturdy building or life flat in a ditch or low-lying area.  If you are in a car or mobile home, get out immediately and head for safety.
  • If a tornado occurs, watch out for fallen power lines and stay out of damaged areas after the storm passes.  Listen to local radio for information and instructions.  Use a flashlight to inspect your home for damage.  Do not use candles.

Wildfire Season Precautions Urged

March 6, 2009 – Columbus, Ohio – Ohioans are urged to be aware of the state's outdoor burning regulations and take necessary precautions if they are planning to burn debris, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Forestry.

Ohio law states that outdoor debris burning is prohibited from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. during March, April, and May. Burning is limited in the spring due to the abundance of dry fuel on the ground before small, grassy fuels green up with moisture.

"About 500 wildfires are reported during spring wildfire season burning around 3000 acres," said David Lytle, chief of the ODNR Division of Forestry. "Longer daylight hours combined with gusty spring winds increase the risk of wildfires. All it takes is a little wind to cause a debris fire to escape control and spread."

If a fire does escape control, immediately contact the local fire department. An escaped wildfire, even one burning in grass or weeds, is dangerous. Violators of Ohio's burning regulations are subject to citations and fines. Residents should also check Ohio Environmental Protection Agency regulations and consult with local fire officials about burning conditions.

The Ohio Division of Forestry offers these safety tips for burning debris outdoors:

  • Consider using a 55-gallon drum with a weighted screen lid to provide an enclosed incinerator.
  • Know current and future weather conditions, and have suppression tools on hand.
  • Be informed of state and local burning regulations.
  • Consult the local fire department for additional information and safety considerations.
  • Visit www.ohiodnr.gov/forestry and www.firewise.org for more information and tips on protecting your rural home and community.
  • Remember, "Don't burn during the day-March, April, and May!"

Spring Trout Releases Provide Fishing Opportunities Around the State

Releases Start March 13 and Continue Through Mid-May

February 20, 2009 – Columbus, Ohio – Public fishing opportunities will be enhanced this spring when more than 80,000 rainbow trout, each measuring 10 to 13 inches long, are released into 45 Ohio lakes and ponds, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife.

The releases will take place between mid-March and mid-May; anglers are reminded that the daily catch limit for inland lakes is five trout. View the full schedule.

Some locations will feature special, youth-only angler events on the day of the scheduled releases. Anglers age 16 and older must have an Ohio fishing license to fish the state's public waters. Once the youth-only events have concluded, all other anglers may fish.

The 2009-2010 fishing license can be purchased now and is required on March 1. An annual resident fishing license costs $19 and is valid through February 28, 2010. A one-day fishing license is available and may be purchased for $11 by residents or non-residents. The one-day license may also be redeemed for credit towards purchase of an annual fishing license.

Ohio residents born on or before December 31, 1937 may obtain a free fishing license where licenses are sold. Persons age 66 and older who were born on or after January 1, 1938, and have resided in Ohio for the past six months, are eligible to purchase the reduced cost resident senior license for $10.

Additional information about spring trout releases is available by calling toll-free 1-800-WILDLIFE. Information is also available from Division of Wildlife district offices in Akron, Athens, Columbus, Findlay, and Xenia.

The effected area will be North Main St. from Monument St. north to the houses north of town on North Main St., also including Henry, Pearl, Walnut, Liberty, North Williams, North Church, Pearson, and West High St.

On Tuesday February 10th, your water service will be interrupted for repairs to the water system. After service is restored you must boil your water for 3-5 min. for cooking and drinking, until other wise notified. A good thing to do is to open an outside hose bib or turn on your bath tub faucet to let the water flush out any rust so it doesn’t clog up any faucet screen when the water is restored, this may take a few minutes. If you have any questions feel free to call Service Garage at (937)676-3241 you may also check Village web site; www.pleasanthillohio.com for updated info

Ohio Issues Weather Safety Tips for Cold/Winter Storms

December 18, 2008 — Columbus, Ohio – With winter rapidly approaching, every household should be prepared to face another period of dangerous winter storms and flooding. The Department of Public Safety Emergency Management Agency (Ohio EMA) urges all residents to be prepared.

To stay safe, learn the difference between winter storm watches and warnings mean; prepare your home against the cold; and use caution and common sense when driving.

Winter Awareness Information:
  • A winter storm WATCH means a winter storm is possible in your area.
  • A winter storm WARNING means a winter storm is occurring or will soon occur in your area. Local National Weather Service forecast offices issue warnings on a county-by-county basis.
  • A blizzard WARNING means sustained winds or frequent gusts to 35 miles per hour or greater and considerable falling or blowing snow (reducing visibility to less than a quarter mile) are expected to prevail for a period of three hours or longer.
  • Be aware of changing weather conditions.
Winter Preparedness Information:
  • Use a NOAA Weather Radio to keep you informed of watches and warnings issued in your area.
  • Keep your vehicle's gas tank full for emergency use and to keep the fuel line from freezing
  • Discuss with your family what to do if a winter storm WATCH or WARNING is issued.
  • Make sure your home is properly insulated. If necessary, insulate walls and attic.
  • To keep pipes from freezing:
    • Wrap pipes in insulation or layers of old newspapers.
    • Cover the newspapers with plastic to keep moisture out
    • Let faucets drip a little to avoid freezing
    • Know how to shut off water valves
Winter Driving:
  • Have your vehicles winterized before the winter storm season
  • Put together a separate disaster supplies kit for your vehicle
  • Be aware of sleet and freezing rain
  • Speed and Distance — The faster you're going, the longer it will take to stop. When accelerating on snow or ice, take it slow to avoid slipping and sliding. Remember, Ice and Snow... Take it Slow.
  • Brake — Brake early, brake slowly, brake correctly, and never slam on the brakes. If you have anti-lock brakes, press the pedal down firmly and hold it. If you don't have anti-lock brakes, gently pump the pedal. Either way, give yourself plenty of room to stop.
  • Control — When driving on ice and snow, do not use cruise control and avoid abrupt steering maneuvers. When merging into traffic, take it slow. Sudden movements can cause your vehicle to slide.
  • Vision — Be aware of what's going on well ahead of you. Actions by other vehicles will alert you to problems more quickly, and give you that split-second of extra time to react safely.
  • Log on to www.buckeyetraffic.org for accurate information on road closures and detours.

Vectren Gas Line Replacement East Monument (SR 718)

Vectren has notified the village that they are replacing the gas lines under East Monument (SR 718). Every East Monument home's gas line will be pressure tested. If it fails, then it must be replaced at the homeowner's expense. Also, if you have an indoor gas meter, the meter must be relocated outside. It is recommended that you have a plummer on stand-by in case your house fails the pressure test. This is a Vectren initiative -- not part of the East Monument project. The gas lines are under the sidewalk, and they are taking advantage of the project's sidewalk replacement. If you have any questions, please contact Vectren 1(800)227-1376 or the Ohio PUCO 1(800)686-7826.

The Village apologizes for the short notice. We are trying to notify the affected residents as soon as possible. We just learned about this on Monday, Oct 6, 2008. We would expect that Vectren will also publish a communication on the gas line replacement.

Water Plant Still Without Power

Pleasant Hill, OH, September 15, 2008 - Pleasant Hill Ohio Board of Public Affairs reports water plant is still without power. The power was lost during the over night hours after yesterday's wind storm. Jeff Derksen, Village of Pleasant Hill Superintendent , called DPL via Miami County 911 and was told power maybe restored by today by 10:30 am or as long as 1 week. Jeff Derksen was told Pleasant Hill Water Plant is on a priority list, but since the village didn't call them earlier; DPL was not in the area.

All attempts to call DPL directly has failed. The village has failed to locate a generator to temporarily power the water plant pumps. Jeff Derksen estimates the village water tower will supply Pleasant Hill Water Customers for another 40 hours.
